In the quinquennial census of 2010, the city had a population of 23,302 (2005: 24,709)〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=2010 census )〕 and a population density of 100 persons per km2. The 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami caused extensive damage to the city, and as of February 2014, the city had an estimated population of 19,449 and a population density of 83.7 persons per km2. The total area was 1,259.89 km2. ==Geography== Rikuzentakata is located in the far southeast corner of Iwate Prefecture, bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the east. The city contained Lake Furukawanuma until the 2011 tsunami destroyed it.
